Fibers
There are many different names for fibers used in the manufacturing of carpet, but the majority will fall into four categories: wool, nylon (polyamide), polypropylene and polyester. These names may be familiar but what the differences are between each one may not be, so here's an overview of them.
Nylon (polyamide)
Nylon is the hardest wearing carpet fiber and possibly one of the most misunderstood. Unfortunately nylon developed a poor reputation as a carpet fiber in its early days. These days however, nylon yarns are some of the best available on the market. Nylon products have good wear qualities and fiber dyes give a vast array of colors and shades to choose from. The problem of static build-up has been eliminated in most nylon yarns and when it is protected with stain resistant treatments, nylon can easily be cleaned and maintained.
Polyester
Polyester is not so widely used as the other fibers, mostly because of its cost. Polyester it is hard wearing and is easy to clean, soft to handle and feels luxurious under the feet.
Polypropylene
Polypropylene is being used more and more when making carpet, because it is highly wear and stain resistant. During manufacture of the yarn, it is dyed to the required color. This causes the dye to be locked in the yarn and cannot be removed. However, it also cannot be re-dyed. This fabric is highly stain resistant and almost all marks can be removed. In some extreme cases a bleach solution can be used to remove stains. Polypropylene yarns are also highly resistant to fading. It has a low electro-static build-up and therefore does not attract much dirt and dust or give you those annoying shocks. As demand has increased for polypropylene, the color to choose from have been improved dramatically and now offer an excellent choice. This is possibly the best choice for families where stain resistance is an important consideration.
Wool
Wool is still considered to be the best fiber used in carpet manufacture for the simple reason that in most cases it will look better for longer than other carpets made out of other fibers. Wool has from nature a great resilience making it recover quickly from compression. Dyes are very well absorbed, which enables many variations of shades to be produced. Wool is very soft to touch, making it warm and comfortable to walk on as well. Wool also has a natural stain resistance, making it easier to maintain and also has naturally low flammability properties, that make it safer for the home. Usually wool is mixed with nylon in an 80% wool, 20% nylon ratio, (carpets using this combination are often referred to as 80:20's). This combines the benefits of wool with the excellent wearing characteristics of nylon to produce a more durable carpet. Unfortunately wool is more expensive than most other carpet fibers.
Carpet construction
As well as color and design, the way a carpet is made will add to the effect you like to achieve by introducing different textures of pile. Each method of construction has its own characteristics that will make it more suitable than other ones for certain locations. The way a carpet is constructed, also decides how the quality will remain during its lifespan. The pile height, weight and density as well as the fibers that are used will decide the quality of the carpet. It is the combination of these factors that tells how a carpet performs in a certain location. Carpets with longer pile heights give a more luxurious feel, but are more prone to flattening. Shorter and denser piles often keep more of their appearance, but they can feel less comfortable. Carpets with heavier pile weights will look, feel and wear better than lighter ones. Unfortunately they also cost more.
Construction methods fall into two main categories "Tufted" and "Woven". The main difference is that tufted carpets are made faster and therefore produces a less expensive product while much better patterns can be produced on woven carpets.
Twist Pile
Twist pile carpets are one of the most popular styles at this moment. While almost all carpet yarns are twisted to some degree, this product get's its name from an extra amount of twist given to the fibers. This extra twisting makes the finished yarn act like a spring and will jump back into shape when it's walked on. The pile heights are kept relatively low which reduces the flattening of the carpet and keeps shading to a minimum. The range of colors available is excellent making it a designer's dream to work with.
Cut Pile
Many carpets with a smooth, single level surface are falling in the category: Cut Pile. Normally this carpet is created white and later a color and design are printed on it. The dense pile is cut and sheared to provide a smooth surface. The use of heat to set the yarn helps to give good appearance retention. Production is efficient, so it keeps the cost of manufacture down tremendously. Thanks to modern printing techniques, the designs and colors are very good. Extreme dense piles with a very smooth finish are known as velvets, while less dense cut pile carpets with a slightly longer pile height are known as plush piles and are often used in bedrooms. They are good all-round products that remain very well although cut pile carpets can show some shading.
Saxony
Saxony has a much higher pile than other types of carpeting. This gives it a very luxurious feel under the feet and the colors available are great. The twisted yarn is "heat set" to give better appearance retention. Because of the luxurious deep pile these carpets do shade, creating the effect of light and dark areas. Like running your hand across velvet curtains. Many people like this effect because it demonstrates how luxurious the carpet is. These carpets are also chosen for their excellent sound insulation and because they are very safe for young children to play on.
Loop pile & Multi-height loop pile
Loop pile carpets are manufactured from both wool and manmade fibers. As the name suggests they are rows of continuing loops, reminding a little of knitting. The loop forms a type of mini spring that when you walk on it, will spring back into shape. This makes the carpet extremely durable and gives it excellent appearance retention. On the down side wool loops can suffer from "pilling" and you need to be careful with pet claws and high heels as the loops can easily be "snagged". Loop pile carpets are also less luxurious than other styles. New construction methods however are producing exciting new designs in loop pile carpets particularly in natural finishes. Modern innovations have now led to the emergence of many 'multi-height' loop pile carpets that are available in a variety of different textured effects and designs, adding interest to this type of carpet that was previously typically only available in plain shades. While loop pile carpets go well in almost any location, some people prefer not to use them on stairs because the backing can show through on the front of the stairs (also known as "grinning").
Cut-n-Loop and Sculptured Carpets
Cut-n-Loop carpets are a combination of cut pile and loop pile carpets. This mix is used to produce high and low areas to the pile, that will create a sculptured effect. The result is a one colored/plain carpet while also having a patterned design. Often an "overprint" is then placed on these carpets to further enhance the design. Cut-n-Loop carpets are mostly produced from man made fibers. Cut pile does mean that shading can show in these carpets. Like loop pile carpets, some people prefer not to use cut-n-loop carpets on their stairs.
Woven Wiltons and Axminster
Woven Wiltons and Axminsters are two of the most traditional methods of manufacturing carpets. They use a much slower method of production than tufting that produces a very high quality carpet. Unlike tufted carpets, where the design is printed onto the surface of the carpet, Woven Wiltons feature patterns that are woven into the carpet using different colored yarns. This produces a much better definition of the design and the appearance retention is excellent. Most modern day Wiltons are produced on high speed machinery using man-made fibers, mostly polypropylene, which makes them much more affordable. Because Axminsters are made almost entirely out of wool or wool/ man-made mixes, they are exceptionally durable and hardly show wearing. The pile is kept relatively short on most woven products so flattening is also kept to a minimum making them suitable for all living areas. In certain qualities and designs some shading might be seen. Qualities may vary depending on the type of wool used and the density of the pile. A good Wilton or Axminster, will last for many years if taken good care of.
Colors
Choosing the color of your carpet is very important. They will set the mood and atmosphere in a room. Here is a list of colors and what effects they might have...

Terracotta
Terracotta gives a warm, Mediterranean feel to the room. It reminds you of the happy days of summer and sunshine.
Design
Design is just as color an important part in the overall results in a room. There are three different design types: Plain, Small Patterned, Large Patterned (also called heavy or traditional patterned).
Plain
Plain carpets are easily matched with all types of furnishings, both modern and traditional. It is perfect for bigger areas because there is no pattern to be followed, making it more economical for these areas. In combination with the color, patterns can make the room look bigger or smaller.
Small Patterned
Small patterned carpets are a great step between plain and large patterned and they come in the more traditional style designs. While they have a pattern, they keep many benefits that a plain carpet will have, like the optical illusion of making rooms appear larger when combined with a color. It has however, a small benefit that the large patterned carpet has: it can help disguise some of the effects of natural use such as soiling or pile flattening. The patterns on these carpets are easier to match and therefore can save money in rooms where joins are needed.
Large Patterned
Large patterned carpets give a more traditional look. They hide many little spill accidents more then the plain or small patterned carpets and show less effects of use, like flattening and shading. Large patterned carpets can be used to make a very large room feel smaller and more inviting.
