PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A silk Persian rug dating from the 16th century or 17th century has sold for a record price of $4.45 million at auction. That is about $729.87 per square inch.! The rug was sold by Christie's auction house Tuesday June 3rd on behalf of the Newport Restoration Foundation. It was expected to bring in up to $1.5 million. The rug, which measures 7ft, 7in by 5ft, 7in, had been purchased by the late tobacco heiress Doris Duke in 1990. She donated it to the foundation when she died. Elisabeth Parker, head of Christie's rugs and carpets department, states that there are only two other known rugs like this one. She calls it an "amazing work of art" and says it has an intricate floral design and an unusually large number of colors, at 17. Christie's mentions that the buyer prefers to remain anonymous.

The current world's largest carpet is in the Qabus Azam Mosque in Muscat, Oman. It was woven by Iran Carpet Co. and shipped to Oman in 2000. It has an area of 5,000 square meters, weighing about 22 tons and was valued at $5.2 million. Asia was the first continent to create rugs and that it was the nomadic wanderers who created them. The oldest rug that is known today, was found in a burial site in the outer Mongolia. The rug, that has the name: "Pazyryk Carpet", was buried over 2500 years and it has been frozen under the Siberian ice in the Altai Mountains region, conserving the condition of the rug. It was made with a knotting style that is known as the "Turkish Knot". This shows the importance of Turkish carpet weaving and how influential it has been over rug weaving in the world. (Pazyryk)
Before the discovery of the Pazyryk Rug, the oldest pile rug fragments of ancient rugs that were ever discovered are found in East Turkmenistan in an area known as Tarim Basin. This area includes parts of northwest India, East Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kirgizstan, Southern Russia, Western China and Mongolia. There are rug fragments found in ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian tombs. This concludes that various forms of flat weaving were well developed more than 4000 years ago. Other evidence shows that weaving of pile rugs existed in the Middle East and other parts of Northwest, Central and Eastern Asia long before 2000 BC. The biggest rug ever is made right now? Bigger than a football field and worth $8.5 million! Will this be the world's largest hand knotted carpet? | Cartoon of 6,000 sq. meter carpet now being woven in Iran TEHRAN -- More than 1,200 Iranian women have begun weaving a giant carpet worth $8.5 million. When completed, it will be the world's largest hand-knotted rug, according to Iran Carpet Co., which is the contractor. It is being made for the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi. The rug will be 6,000 square meters, bigger than a football stadium and weighing about 48 tons. It will take about 14 months for the weavers to complete, working two shifts daily, according to the company. It will be decorated with traditional Persian designs and natural colors with more than 2.2 billion knots. The weaving began in March 2006 in Baghshan, 22 kilometers from the city of Neyshabour, (a village 800 km northeast of Tehran), and two nearby villages, close to the city of Mashad in Khorassan Province, in northeastern Iran. | | "The weavers are all experienced women between ages of 15 and 60, supervised by 50 men acting as technical experts who will travel to Abu Dhabi to join the pieces at the mosque once the carpet is completed. The carpet will be made in eight different parts," according to Iran Carpet.

The project has revived the carpet economy in northeastern Iran which has a long history of carpet making," a company spokesman said. |
