Installation

The following methods are used when a hardwood floor is installed:

Nail Down

The hardwood floor is attached to a wooden subfloor with nails.
This method is mainly used with classic / solid hardwood floors.

Staple Down

The hardwood floor is attached to a wooden subfloor with a pneumatic stapler.
This method is used when the hardwood floor is thin and no nails can be used.

Glue Down

The hardwood floor is glued to the subfloor.
This method is mostly used with engineered hardwood floors.

Floating

The planks of the hardwood floor are glued together and rested on a pad that lies between the hardwood floor and the subfloor.
Using this method, the floor is not attached to the subfloor. It is only used with engineered floors and can only be used on or above the main floor (not in basements!).

The method to choose depends on several factors:
Is it a solid or engineered hardwood floor?
On what kind of subfloor will the hardwood floor be installed?
Where will the hardwood floor be installed?
